My Picks of the Week! (August 14th)

Happy Monday, Muses!

And happy Hunger Games! That's right, on Saturday, August 18th you will be able to pick up your very own copy of The Hunger Games on blu-ray or dvd! If you absolutely can't wait, check out your local Walmart or movie stores because many places are doing midnight release parties (such as my store, I work part time at a Moviestop) on Friday. So go get dressed up and have some fun while you anxiously await until midnight!

In Adult books, there are a few interesting releases this week. If you are looking for a book that will move you, check out 600 Hours of Edward by Craig Lancaster. Need spice in your life? More Than Words by Karla Doyle and Wake Me Up Inside by Cardeno C both sound yummy! And if you are looking for something different, Romeo Spikes by Joanne Reay has an interesting premise!

In Young Adult, Onyx, the much anticipated sequel to Jennifer L. Armentrout's Obsidian finally hits shelves tomorrow. I am actually looking forward to reading Earth Girl by Janet Edwards, but be aware that it is a UK release as I believe Janet Edwards is a UK writer. I just liked the premise so much that I figured to add it to this list as some of you with amazon.com accounts can easily go to the amazon.uk site to order the book if it catches your fancy.

Not much is going on in the movie department other than The Hunger Games, although I want to check out the gay musical Leave It on the Floor. If you are into action/martial arts movies, then you may want to check out The Raid: Redemption, although I personally didn't care for it.

Finally, in TV Series, the 2 big releases are Glee: Season 3 and Dexter: Season 6. This is a great time to get caught up on both if you are behind since the new seasons of both shows start back up soon.

Enjoy these great releases and may the odds be ever in your favor!

BOOKS (August 14-17th)

ADULT

600 Hours of Edward
by: Craig Lancaster

A thirty-nine-year-old with Asperger’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder, Edward Stanton lives alone on a rigid schedule in the Montana town where he grew up. His carefully constructed routine includes tracking his most common waking time (7:38 a.m.), refusing to start his therapy sessions even a minute before the appointed hour (10:00 a.m.), and watching one episode of the 1960s cop show Dragnet each night (10:00 p.m.).

But when a single mother and her nine-year-old son move in across the street, Edward’s timetable comes undone. Over the course of a momentous 600 hours, he opens up to his new neighbors and confronts old grievances with his estranged parents. Exposed to both the joys and heartaches of friendship, Edward must ultimately decide whether to embrace the world outside his door or retreat to his solitary ways.

Heartfelt and hilarious, this moving novel will appeal to fans of Daniel Keyes’s classic Flowers for Algernon and to any reader who loves an underdog.

More Than Words
by: Karla Doyle

Romeo Spikes
by: Joanne Reay

Working the Homicide squad, Alexis Bianco believes she’s seen every way a life can be taken. Then she meets the mysterious Lola and finds out she’s wrong. More weapon than woman, Lola pursues a predator with a method of murder like no other.

The Tormenta.

If you think you’ve never encountered Tormenta, think again. You’re friends with one. Have worked for one. Maybe even fallen in love with one.

They walk amongst us—looking like us, talking like us. Coercing our subconscious with their actions.

Like the long-legged beauty that seduces the goofy geek only to break his heart, causing him to break his own neck in a noose. Or the rockstar, whose every song celebrates self-harm, inspiring his devoted fans to press knives to their own throats. The pusher who urges the addict toward one more hit, bringing him a high from which he’ll never come down. The tyrannical boss, crushing an assistant’s spirit until a bridge jump brings her low.

We call it a suicide. Tormenta call it a score, their demonic powers allowing them to siphon off the unspent lifespan of those who harm themselves.

To Bianco, being a cop is about right and wrong. Working with Lola is about this world and the next...and maybe the one after that. Because everything is about to change. The coming of a mighty Tormenta is prophesied, a dark messiah known as the Mosca.

To stop him, Bianco and Lola must fight their way through a cryptic web of secret societies and powerful legends to crack an ancient code that holds the only answer to the Mosca’s defeat. If this miscreant rises before they can unmask him, darkness will reign, and mankind will fall in a storm of suicides.

Nobody’s safe. Everyone’s a threat.

Happy Endings: Seasons 1&2

Starring: Eliza Coupe, Zachary Knighton

Happy Endings: Season One
Take six twentysomething Chicago friends, add cocktails and hormones, shake, and, you've got Happy Endings, the hilarious, edgy new comedy that asks: when a couple splits, who gets to keep the friends? Dave (Zachary Knighton, TV's FlashForward) finds fulfillment (sort of) manning a food truck after losing his hot fiancee Alex (Elisha Cuthbert, TV's 24) at the altar. Alex's type-A sister Jane (Eliza Coupe, TV's Scrubs) is almost happily married to horndog Brad (Damon Wayans Jr., TV's The Underground). Dave's roommate Max (Adam Pally) is a gay, sports-loving slob, and Penny (Casey Wilson, TV's SNL) is on the prowl for a good man...or men. The laughs are nonstop as they do what tightly-knit friends do best: hang out, have fun, debate the meaning of life, hook up, break up, and do it all over again!

Happy Endings: Season Two
Crank landlords, nosy childhood friends, Brozilians, gym bullies, sexy Halloween costumes, racist parrots, Happy Endings: The Complete Second Season offers more, more, more of the hit series about six best friends navigating life and love in Chicago's hip downtown. Alex (Elisha Cuthbert, TV's 24) and Dave (Zachary Knighton, TV's FlashForward) become real friends again (with - whoops! - benefits?). Jane (Eliza Coupe, TV's Scrubs) hilariously tests out her maternal instincts while hubby Brad (Damon Wayans Jr., TV's The Underground) unwittingly gets a "work wife." Max (Adam Pally) actually lands the perfect boyfriend that the gang falls in love with. Meanwhile, "The Year of Penny" is off to a rocky start as Penny (Casey Wilson, TV's Saturday Night Live) struggles with everything from birthday curses to '80s-themed scavenger hunts. Another round of laughs, please, for the funniest show on TV!
